A PCR Covid Test is a test that is done using a laboratory molecular platform that produces results consisting of either a positive or negative diagnosis for the COVID-19 virus. A health care professional collects a fluid sample from the nasal cavity that is analyzed by the platform equipment to determine the presence or absence of the covid virus.

A Rapid Antigen Test also requires a health care professional collecting a fluid sample from the nasal cavity. The test is done using a relatively simple plastic test kit that works by detecting the antigen proteins on the surface of the virus.

The key difference between a PCR Test vs a Rapid Test is that the PCR tests look for genetic material from the virus, and the antigen test looks for molecules on the surface of the virus.

The PCR test requires expensive and specialized laboratory molecular equipment, while the Rapid Test is done with a simple self-contained apparatus.

The trade-off is that the PCR test is significantly more accurate than the Rapid Antigen Test and much less prone to producing a false negative result.
